GET YOUR TAXES DONE!
An IRS tax extension gives you until October 15 to file your tax return without facing penalties. However, you must request it by the regular April tax filing deadline, and it does not extend the time you have to pay your taxes. You must still estimate and pay any taxes owed by April to avoid interest and late-payment penalties.
3 Ways to Request an Extension
Pay Online: Pay your estimated taxes owed using an official IRS online payment tool and check the box indicating the payment is for an extension. This automatically grants the extension without filing a separate form.
IRS Free File: Use the IRS Free File program to electronically submit your extension request for free, regardless of your income level.
Mail Form 4868: Complete and mail Form 4868. You must estimate your tax liability and subtract any taxes you already paid for the year.
Special Extension Circumstances
Living Outside the U.S.: U.S. citizens and resident aliens living out of the country on the regular tax due date receive an automatic 2-month extension.
Disaster Situations: Taxpayers affected by a recognized disaster situation may qualify for additional time to file.
Other Entities: Specialized extension forms exist for businesses (Form 7004), exempt organizations (Form 8868), estates (Form 4768), and retirement plans (Form 5558).
